St Columba’s Catholic Primary, based in Bradford West Yorkshire, have launched its new kitchen garden with a little help from BURG-WÄCHTER UK. The concept of the “Kitchen Garden” is to provide a natural haven the children can grow their own plates of food. As well as promoting healthy eating and healthy lifestyles, the garden also gets children and parents alike involved in the local community and their growing projects.
Mark Pearson, Senior National Account Manager for BURG-WÄCHTER UK said:
“This has been a really good project to be involved in, the teachers and children are so passionate about it and it is quite inspiring! The pictures are good but seeing it in real time and listening to the children talk about their own involvement was great to witness. I think it is something we can be very proud of as a business to say that we have contributed to a long term project that encourages children and families to live a healthier lifestyle whilst equipping them with some long term ‘green fingered’ life skills!”
Linda Marshall of St Columba’s Catholic Primary also commented:
“Over the six weeks we continued to garden and were able to supply the local church food bank with fresh produce. Its hard to believe the garden is only months old it is doing so well . The greenhouse has produced a fantastic crop of tomatoes and cucumbers over the summer.
We have planted potatoes that should be ready around the Christmas period and are now looking at our Autumn planting plans. Before the break we had stalls and gave away our produce to parents , many gave donations to the garden club fund , so we can keep our supply growing …and I have saved the best for last…
We have been awarded the RHS School Gardening Level 5 Award we are so excited . We will be now known as a 5 star gardening school, this has been achieved with your partnership and support.”
