The Mirfield Show goes from strength to strength
With help from a Secure Communities Scheme award of £1000.
The Mirfield Show was the latest event to benefit from the Burg-Wächter Secure Communities Scheme. It was held Sunday 18th August and attracted close to 10,000 visitors. The main show ring was the centre of attention, with everything from gun dog displays to Wild West entertainment. The local community played a central role, contributing to performances and manning the stands. Live music played throughout and dancers from the nearby performing arts school showed their best moves. Other attractions included Mirfield’s strongest man, a bake off and children’s fancy dress and dog competitions. It really a day of fun for all of the family.
The event is staged by The Mirfield Agricultural Show Society in Kirklees, West Yorkshire and is over 70 years old. The show organisers work tirelessly throughout the year to book the best attractions, co-ordinate all the stands and organise the many competitions. The show relies on sponsors and corporate supporters and this year it received £1,000 cash and a Show Security Kit from the Burg-Wächter Secure Communities Scheme. This scheme aims to support community projects like the Mirfield Show.
The Secure Communities Scheme is now seeking other schemes from across the country to support. It is open to any activity or project that is organised by and benefits the local community. A fund of £1000 a month is available and awards are made based on the potential for positive local impact. Successful applicants will also benefit from security advice and receive a free selection of security products chosen specifically to suit their requirements.
Besides festivals, fetes and summer shows, the Secure Communities Scheme is open to communities undertaking maintenance or refurbishment projects relating to property or open spaces. This could involve allotments, common areas, village halls, sports fields or activity centres. Community events and activities are also eligible such as school breakfast clubs, food banks or firework displays and fun runs.
Joe Kelly is one of the organisers for the Mirfield Show, he comments, “This type of award can really make a difference to a community event like ours. It is very flexible so the funds can be used in a way that best suits the event. It helped us protect and secure the Show, both physically and financially and I would recommend the Scheme to other community organisers”.
